Short update for a short month

Hey folks,

So we all know that February is probably the worst month of all for a few reasons:

1. It's short.
2. It's almost always too cold.
3. No major holidays (Valentine's Day is kind of a scam)
4. S. A. D.
The list goes on. So we tried to set up some quality shows at some quality places to help get you through.
First we'll be at The Note in West Chester, Pa. with Big Fat Maker on February 10th. This is going to be a fun night with some great bands...
Second, we'll be at Kelly's Logan House in Wilmington, De. on February 25th.
You know us... Always selflessly helping others.

How have things been? It seems like a few months since we've last crossed paths. I hope you are doing just as well as when we last met. How are the kids? I guess these days are a little less hectic with them not in school. Do you miss them? I know I probably would. Well... don't fret they will be back soon enough and you'll be full of life again. Anyway I was just writing to let you know that I'll be in town on Saturday January 21st. Soooo... if you want to catch up over a drink or something maybe we could meet up at the old East End. I think it's called Mojo Main now. I am busy during the day but could meet you there around 9:00pm. What do you think?... anyway It would be nice to see you again.

A few important reminders and announcements:

Our first show at MilkBoy Philadelphia is this Saturday. Sure hope to see you there! Your support is invaluable, and that is especially true when we're playing new venues. We're really looking forward to this one - so a special thanks to those of you who have gone above and beyond to get some new faces into the crowd, we truly appreciate it. Doors open at 8:30 and Lettuce Prey (Mike Lenert from Caterpillar) will kick things off at 9:30. If you weren't able to make it to our last few shows, then there are a lot of new tunes that you've yet to hear, so come on out! You can get your tickets HERE and if you're looking to share a ride to the show, the Facebook event is a great place to start.

We also wanted to remind you that voting is still open for the 1st Annual Tri State Indie Music Awards. You can cast one vote per day per computer, network IP address or phone for each category through February 26th. We were privileged enough to be interviewed by TSI at NON-COMM 2011 and we've watched them do a lot of great things for the Indie music scene since... This nomination is a true honor and we're up against some tough competition, so PLEASE help us spread the word! NEW YEAR NEW SHOWS!

With the new year comes many firsts for New Sweden. Like our first show at MilkBoy in Philadelphia on January 14th. (1100 Chestnut Street Philadephia, PA 19107) This is a bar and music venue located in Center City Philadelphia. It is the brainchild of music industry veterans Tommy Joyner and Jamie Lokoff (MilkBoy Recording Studio) and food and bev veteran Bill Hanson (Continental, Budokan, Alma de Cuba, JG Domestic). MilkBoy Philadelphia is a change from the original coffeeshop venue – it adds more space, a bar and beefier PA system. We are overly excited to give this venue the NS treatment and look forward to kicking off a new year with you all.

NEW SONG, NEW VIDEO, NEW VENUE!

So we sort of took a break from the whole live video thing we were doing for a while, and with anything you love, absence makes the heart grow fonder. BUT... Now we are back with a new little gem shot in a mysterious underground lair located somewhere in Wilmington, Delaware. I'm super excited to debut one of our NEW songs (Down the Line) in a NEW video (shot by our good friend Noah Gabriel) in a NEW update (written by James Dukenfield). Enjoy.

So... Tri State Indie has acknowledged New Sweden as one of the best Delaware based bands in the tri state area by nominating us for BEST INDIE BAND/ARTIST IN DELAWARE!!!!!!!!!!! Although we are super excited and honored to even be nominated we would really like to win. Thats where you come in. As you can see in the graphic above online voting starts December 1st. Now depending on when you read this that might have already passed. In which case you would be late. But not too late because you can vote once a day everyday until Feb 16th 2012... That's 1 vote per category, per day, per computer. That means potentially you guys could vote for New Sweden 78 times per person, per computer. And seeing who we are up against we might just need you to. The final winners of each category will be awarded live on stage at the TSI Music Awards at World Cafe Live.

The TSI Music Awards will be a red carpet affair that will celebrate the best of the best regional and national indie musicians, bands and festivals along with an evening of five stellar live performances. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! We had more than a few things to be thankful for including our recent nomination for Best Indie Band in Delaware in the 1st Annual Tri State Indie Music Awards. We're up against some tough competition, The Sky Drops and The Spinto Band - so we're really going to need your help. Voting opens December 1st and you can vote for your favorites once per day until February 19th. We'll be sure to remind you.

We've been laying low lately to work on some new tunes and there's a good chance you'll get to hear one or two at our next show Friday, December 9th at the Burlap and Bean. This is also our last show of the year, so grab your tickets now! Opening is Chelsea Lee, the soulful acoustic pop singer from Washington, DC who was signed to Atlantic Records in 2008, just days after her 18th birthday. Hey, I wanted to update you on some of what's going on in the New Sweden world.

We have a cool new music player (on the right) that allows you to stream and purchase our new album, "the Mountain". So you should probably be checking that out while you're reading this. When using the music player on the right ~~> you might notice some cool features - not only can you stream and purchase the album (including the exclusive digital track, Mama), you can share the player with your friends on Facebook! You can also pop the player off the screen so you can listen while you surf. One more cool thing about this new music player is that we are offering a free song in exchange for your email address. We like to barter over here in the NS camp - simply click on the words "Free Song" and submit your email address. It's like magic! "The Highest Road" will appear in your inbox......

Alright... First off, in the upcoming show department New Sweden will be opening for James McMurtry at the World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, PPA this Tuesday, October 18th. This is going to be a great show for all you XPN listeners out there. You know who you are. Mr. McMurtry grew up on a steady diet of Johnny Cash and Roy Acuff records and has worked with John Mellencamp. Stephen King thinks he's "the truest, fiercest songwriter of his generation". Yeah... Second, New Sweden will be performing our first show in Kennett Square, PA at the Kennett Flash Saturday, October 22nd with the Splashing Pearls. Last Friday’s record release at the Queen was by far the best show to date. Thanks to each and every one of you who came out to support and a big welcome to the new faces we hadn’t seen before. We hope you had as much fun as we did!

The next day, we find out WE did it! You all stood behind us and helped us reach our goal on Kickstarter, all $7500... We’re truly blessed to have such dedicated friends, fans and family. THANK YOU. Just in case you were looking to help out, but haven’t had the chance to make a pledge, there are still two weeks left in the campaign. Every penny we earn will go towards promotion of The Mountain, so please, continue to help us spread the word! Before we even finished processing the weekend, we get a call saying we’re confirmed to open for The Felice Brothers, one of our favorite bands, at World Cafe Live at The Queen on August 25th! Someone slap us...

From the Studio

Big news: We recorded all of the tracks for our debut album last week!

Our time at Hammerhead Studios with Ritchie Rubini and Nick DiDia was great. The many hours of preparation that we put in during June were truly worth it. We were able to play our songs in a relaxed manner and we’re really proud of how they sound. Expect to hear your favorite tunes along with a couple more that you may have never heard before.

We would love to see your faces at the Record Release Party on July 29 at World Café Live at the Queen. The Spinning Leaves and Johnny Miles (both Philly favs) are joining us on the downstairs stage.

Even bigger news: To date, you’ve pledged about $3500 to our Kickstarter campaign! We need $7500 to cover the costs of the album and we’re 40% there with 52 days to go. That being said, we REALLY need your help to finish things off. Every little bit helps and we’ll give you something cool in return.

Beans: Consider 'em Spilled...

Life's a bit crazy, so while there's a lot to update, there's certainly not a lot of time. In short, the last few weeks were another whirlwind; we rocked out the Baby Grand, had the pleasure of two on-air performances (one w/ WSTW's Mark Rogers and the other w/ WXPN's Dan Reed), played for the rain-dancers in Arden at the Shady Grove Music Fest...

And now you may ask? Well, we're finally ready to talk... This Wednesday, we go back into the studio with two people we are very proud to welcome into the New Sweden family - Producer Ritchie Rubini, a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who’s toured both nationally and internationally while drumming with The Caulfields, and Grammy Award-winning Sound Engineer Nick DiDia who has worked on some of the best albums over the past decade including those of Bruce Springsteen, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine, Incubus and Martin Sexton - to name a few.

How'd we get this lucky? We don't know, but regardless, we couldn't be happier and we absolutely cannot wait to finally share this with you at our official Record Release Party - July 29th at World Cafe Live at The Queen (Downstairs). We're thrilled to bring you yet another fantastic line-up including The Spinning Leaves and Johnny Miles, both based out of Philadelphia. I know we always say this, but it's going to be one hell of a show, SO DON'T MISS IT!

On a final note, with so much to tackle, WE NEED YOUR HELP. Nothing we've accomplished over the last year and a half would have been possible without you, we sincerely hope you know that, and our newly launched Kickstarter campaign is certainly no exception...

Rockin' Through Rapture

Lots to update! We’re slackers, we know…

Opening up for Free Energy in Arden last week was a blast and the perfect way to start off one of our most exciting weeks to date. Arden shows are always a favorite and Friday the 13^th at Gild Hall was no exception. Free Energy’s fans were far from shy, making for a rowdy night from start to finish!

The next day was a rainy one, so extra special thanks to those of you who traveled to Penn’s Landing w/ us for the Art Star Craft Bazaar. Despite the gloomy weather, we had an awesome time rockin’ out, and we thoroughly enjoyed perusing the work of all of the vendors. Monsters and mustaches seemed to be the theme with artists like Fuzzy Ink, Cutesy but not Cutesy, Spaghetti Kiss and Jordan Elise bringing lots of quirky (and sometimes creepy) fun. No seriously, did you see this mustache?!?!

We then spent the week gearing up for WXPN’s Non-Comm. It was an honor to share a bill with such undeniable talent; big thanks to Dan Reed for inviting us to play! Being local and therefore able to enjoy each and every act was a huge perk. Every performance was captivating – The Head and The Heart’s set came out with the most votes from us but Junip, Justin Townes Earle and Raphael Saadiq were all close seconds; I’m not sure if any of us had a single complaint – it was three days of phenomenal music.

In other news… We decided to record a live demo a few weeks ago so we had something to share with you while we finish up the album. It’s called Lovers Lane and you'll be able to snag a copy for only 5 bucks at any of our upcoming shows. Your first shot will be Saturday, June 4^th at the Baby Grand, where Mean Lady and Black Horse Motel will be opening up the night for us. If by some chance you haven’t heard of either band yet, do yourself a favor and check them out – we can’t wait for this performance! Excited to Announce...

Okay, we can’t keep quiet anymore… WE’RE PLAYING NON-COMM!

Yes, that’s right; we’re officially sharing a bill with Bright Eyes, Ben Harper, The Head and the Heart and Justin Townes Earle (to name a few) at XPN’s 11^th Annual Non-COMMvention to be held at World Café Live’s new location at the Queen in Wilmington on May 19-21. We’re honored (and that is an understatement) to not only play among some of our favorite artists, but to have an opportunity to share our music with industry leaders that GET what we do. Unfortunately, if you don’t have tickets yet, you won’t be able to catch us this time around as it’s already sold-out, but we still wanted to share our big news with you. You can find out more about the non-commercial gathering and this year’s lineup HERE.

We’re back in action on April 22^nd with a free all-ages show at Home Grown Café in Newark. We’re also happy to announce our return to Arden’s Guild Hall on May 13^th with Philadelphia favorite Free Energy (they've opened for Weezer - check 'em out!). Tickets to the all-ages Guild Hall show are only $12 and can be purchased HERE.

On a final note, our track If King Don’t Come is a part of WVUD’s new compilation CD Dare 2 B Loud which can now be purchased at Wonderland, Rainbow Records and Bert’s and will shortly be available on iTunes. Support local radio… buy it!

I know it has been a while since our last update, but that doesn't mean we haven't been productive. We've just been busy with our collective "nose to the grindstone." We have performed alongside Stallions to a packed Kelly's Logan House and had a very successful showing to our acoustic set at the North Star Bar's Victorian Dining Room with Black Horse Motel. Horse-related bands have been a theme for us lately.

We also have been very busy planning some big things for the near future. We're excited to announce that we have just signed on to be among this year's performers at Ram Jam. We're even more excited to tell you that we're working diligently on our debut album. So, stay tuned for more information about that.

We’ve had two fantastic shows since our last update. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported us both at Kung Fu Necktie in Philly last weekend and Bellefonte Café on Friday. We have to give a big shout out to Kung Fu and their amazing sound, we heard compliment after compliment and it feels good to play in a place that gets what we do. We look forward to hopefully working with them again in the near future. Bellefonte was a lot of fun too; it was awesome to see everyone crammed in together and having a great time! Not to mention it’s cool when our biggest fans, the kids, get a chance to be in on the action…

We’re playing another unplugged show next Monday at the North Star Bar in Philly as part of their Victorian Dining Room Series. We really hope you all can make it. It’s a great chance to see us in a quiet setting and chow down on some delicious food. There’s no cover and the menu is reasonable -who wants to turn down an affordable night in Philly? No one. Team Sweden is also organizing carpools, so there aren’t too many excuses you can use. The show starts at 8pm, so even though it’s a Monday night, you’ll still be home by bedtime. Perhaps we’re getting a little bit ahead of ourselves, though. First things first – we’ll see you all at Kelly’s Logan House this Saturday at 9pm where we get to share the stage with Stallions yet again.

Last Saturday night at Mojo Main was packed and the energy was through the roof. Insane. Special thanks to Smoke Signals, Stallions and each and every one of you that came to support. Sunday was another good one. We snagged our first Homey Award from WSTW and Hometown Heroes for Best New Artist... thanks again for the nomination! Recording, recording and now this Saturday, we get to play in Philly with The Future Unwritten at Kung Fu Necktie. It’s a good week.

Oh, don't forget about our UNPLUGGED set next Friday at Bellefonte Cafe. If you haven't been there, it's awesome. Great food, service, music and best of all you can bring the kid - so no excuses.

We’re excited to announce a special show that we’ve added for the end of this month at Bellefonte Café. It doesn’t really get more up-close-and-personal than Bellefonte, and it’s going to be the first time in over a year we’ll be playing unplugged. This is a rare opportunity for both us and our fans. We really hope you can make it.

In other news, we met with the team at Mobius New Media a few weeks ago to discuss production of our next music video, courtesy of Out & About’s Musikarmageddon, and we can’t wait to get to work. They seem to be pretty stoked about it too; bets are this is going to be a nice collaboration— we’ll certainly keep you updated.

Other than that, we’re still working non-stop on the album (which is coming together beautifully) and planning our summer shows and fall tour. We’ll be announcing the first single from the album and the date of our record release party really soon, so keep an eye out. If there are any venues or festivals (regardless of location) you’d love to see us at, leave a comment below and let us know. We’d love to hear your picks.

You may notice a small gap in our shows. Not to worry, we’re simply taking a break from the stage to get some serious work done on the new album and rest up before we hit the road this summer. Yup, you heard us, the road. But, we’ll be back in full, local force beginning in April so you can come out and have some fun before we leave our sweet stomping grounds behind.

You have two chances to catch us while we’re in winter hibernation, though - the first of which is Spark’s 7th Birthday Bash at Kelly’s Logan House on January 28th at 7pm. We’re playing the VIP portion of the evening alongside The Hold-Up and Felix Hunger. It opens to the public at 10pm, but that will be too late. You need to score a VIP ticket in order to catch us in action! If you missed your chance at registering to win a ticket, we know just where you might be able to get your hands on one. Word on the street is there are two ticket raids: Thursday, January 20th at Santa Fe in Wilmington and Tuesday, January 25th at Mojo Main, both at 10pm.

A special thanks to Spark Magazine for all they do. We’re still enjoying what their Summer Series brought us and we don’t expect this party to let us down. We really hope you can come out and help us make this show special so we can take that excitement into the studio. See you soon.

First of all, we'd like to thank WSTW and Mark Rogers, host of Hometown Heroes, for all of the love and support this past year. Mark is certainly a man who understands and appreciates the passion behind original music and is dedicated to getting it heard. For that, sir, we are sincerely grateful. Each year, Hometown Heroes hosts it's own version of the Grammy's, with listeners submitting their picks for the best in each category and those nominations being voted on by a panel of judges. This beautiful process is also known as the Homey Awards, and this year we need your help to make it to the final ballot.

It's simple. You can give your opinion on as many or as few topics as you'd like and even make your own categories. Be creative! There is a lot of great original music in the area and if you disagree then maybe you should take a listen to some of the artists on this year's recap list. Hey, kids! Awesome time last night at Mojo Main, once again. As always, we had a ton of fun with our friends, My Friends, and we were happy to share the stage with New Orleans-based Glasgow who stopped by on their national tour and brought a cool sound along with them. We didn't intend to disappear from posting for so long, but this past month has been hectic. We've playing, writing, recording and generally working our asses off to give you our all. The Mojo Main shows have been fun. In case you haven't been, it's the old East End Cafe on Main Street in Newark. Newly purchased and reopened by the owners of Mojo 13, Jerad Schafer and Jeff McKay (who also owns Bourbon Street Grill), they're once again bringing you nightly entertainment and a damn decent meal. Plus the super cool mask pictured below, obviously, you can't go wrong. Next Mojo Main show is Friday, December 17th, but you can catch us at Mojo 13 THIS Saturday, December 20th. 10.10.ten - Wow. Last night was incredible. We were honored enough to get the chance to play inside such a historic building and share the stage with such great local talent - but to WIN? And now to play the mainstage at The Grand?! It's all a little too surreal. But, we can start to think of ways to fill those 1208 seats a little later and just enjoy the moment. Out & About did an excellent job with Musikarmageddon from beginning to end and the local music fans clearly appreciated the effort. Every show was well attended and the excitement never simmered. So many of you came out last night to support and your energy really is what brought us to victory. Thank you. Thank you, fans. Thank you, Out & About. Thank you, fine judges. Thank you. Thank you. Hi everyone - It’s been a while since the last update, so… here it is! As you may know, we have been involved with a couple of musical competitions this summer. We are happy to report that we won the 2010 Spark Summer Series!!! Expect to see us on the cover of Spark, along with an interview on September 29th. As for Out and About's Musikarmageddon, we are moving on to the finals! We will be playing at the Baby Grand in Wilmington on October 9!

Thank you so much to everyone that was involved, and especially to our amazing fans. You guys mean so much to us! We will continue to give it our all for you.

We are going to be very busy the next few weeks. If you haven’t been to a show for a while, here’s your chance to come see us play! We are excited to announce a few shows, friends! We just added a date for Philly! We will be playing North Star Bar on September 15th. This is great because we have been there countless times to see some of our favorite bands. It's nice to finally venture into the city of brotherly love. We would love to see as many of you as possible!

Also, we played Arena's in Rehoboth a few weeks ago, and if you haven't had a chance to vote for your favorite band of the series, please visit Spark Summer Series and cast your vote for a chance to win a $500 shopping spree to The Ski Bum. Hello, a quick update. We are moving on to the next round of "Out and about's Muskarmageddon" Thank you Kelly's Logan House for having us! The Hold Up were great and it's no fun to compete against bands when we are all here to have a good time and share creativity. But cool nonetheless.

We are still in the studio and cannot wait to share what we have created with Mr. Peter Scobell. He plays in Daydream Hostages, look them up and give a listen. Very cool music, full of attitude and emotion!
